Syntymäpäivä Birthday

 

 Emilia vietti syntymäpäiväänsä eilen. Samalla vietettiin Halloweenia. Emilia oli kutsunut parhaat ystävänsä juhlaan. Juhlassa olivat pikkuveli Eetu, hänen vieressään Minni. Emilia itse istuu pöydän päässä. Eetua vastapäätä istuu Sanni ja hänen vieressään Ulla.

Äiti oli leiponut hämähäkiverkkokakun ja haamuleivoksia. Ne maistuivat herkulliselta. 

Emily celebrated her birthday yesterday. At the same time she and the friends celebrated Halloween. Emily had invited her best friends to the party. Emily´s little brother Eetu is sitting at the table. Minnie is sitting next to Eetu. Sanni is sitting opposite Eetu and Ulla is sitting next to her.

Mother had baked a spiderwebcake and chost pastries. They were delicious.

        Myös vanhemmat oli kutsuneet vieraita.  He joivat kahvia musiikkihuoneessa.

        Also the parents had invited guests. They had coffee in the music room.

Äiti oli leiponut kurpitsapiirakan ja suklaatäytekakun. Kaupasta oli ostettu pikkuleipiä ja makeisia. 

Mother had baked a pumpkin pie and a chocolatecake. Some cookies and candies had been bought from the shop.

Sieniä Mushrooms

 

Marianne on ollut metsässä keräämässä sieniä. Hän on löytänyt kanttarelleja ja tatteja. Metsässä oli paljon monenlaisia sieniä, mutta hän ei tunnista niitä. Sää on muuttunut nyt kylmäksi, joten oli viime hetket käydä keräämässä niitä.

Marianne has been in the forest and collected mushrooms. She has found chanterelles and tatters. There were many different kinds of mushrooms in the forest, but she doesn't recognize them The weather has turned cold, so now it was the last minute to collect them.

 

Eetu on äidin kanssa keittiössä ja hän yrittää löytää sienikirjoista äidin tuomien sienien nimet.

Eetu is in the kitchen with his mom and he is trying to find out the names of the mushrooms in mushroom books.

Marianne paistaa kanttarelleja paistinpannulla ja valmistaa niistä jotakin herkullista ruokaa.

Marianne fries chanterelles in a frying pan and preparse some delicious food from them.

Pumpkins and an applepie

Meillä Suomessa ei kurpitsoiden kasvatus onnistu joka vuosi, koska ei ole tarpeeksi lämmintä. On helpompi saada nukkekodin kurpitsoita, jos on jonkinlaiset taidot tehdä niitä.

In Finland, we do not succeed in growing pumpkins every year because it is not warm enough. It is easier to get dollhouse pumpkins. if you have some skills to make them.

 

Mariannella on ollut onnea kurpitsoiden suhteen. Hänellä on niitä monen värisiä ja hän on niistä iloinen.

 Marianne has been lucky with pumpkins. He has them in many colors and he is happy with them.

Itse kasvatetuista omenoistakin voi olla iloinen. Niistä voi tehdä hilloa, menua ja piirakkaa. Lapset syövät juuri nyt kermavaahdon ja kylmän maidon kanssa herkullista omenapiirakkaa.

You can also be happy about home-grown apples. They can be used for jam, juice and pie. Right now, the children are eating delicious apple pie with whipped cream and cold milk.

Piirakassa on punaisia talviomenoita, jotka kypsyvät vasta syksyllä ennen pakkasten tuloa.

There are red winter apples in the pie, which ripen in autumn just before the frost

Piristystä Cheering up

 

Syksy on ollut sateinen ja synkkä. Keltaiset tuoreet kukat piristävät. Samoin kuin keltaiset tavarat keittiössä.

The autumn has been rainy and cloomy. Fresh yellow flowers will cheer up. As well as all the yellow things in the kitchen.

 

Keltainen väri ei ole Mariannen suosikkiväri, mutta täytyy myöntää, että se piristää sateisena ja synkkänä päivänä.

 

Yellow is not Marianne´s favourite colour, but she has to admit, it cheers up on a rainy and cloomy day.

Mariannen mielestä on ihanaa, että syksyinen sää ei tunkeudu sisätiloihin.

Marianne thinks it is lovely to know the autumn weather does not invade inside

 

 Keltaiset kurpitsat ovat keittiön kirkas väripilkku ja tuovat iloa.

Yellow pumpkins are a bright spot in the kitchen and bring joy.

Äitienpäivä Mother´s Day

Eetu ja Emilia halusivat mennä herättämään tänä aamuna äidin, sillä hän nukkui edelleen. Heillä oli hänelle lahjoja ja kahvia.

Eetu and Emily wanted to go wake up their mother this morning as she was still sleeping. They had some gifts for her and coffee.

Eetu antoi äidille punaiseen paperiin käärityn lahjan.

Eetu gave Mom a gift wrapped in red paper.

Lahja oli puinen pannunalunen, jonka hän oli tehnyt koulussa. Eetu selitti, että sen tekemisessä oli monta työvaihetta: sahaamista, hiomista, naulaamista ja vahaamista. Äiti sanoi, että Eetu on tehnyt lahjan hyvin huolellisesti.

The gift was a wooden pan coaster he had made at school. Eetu explained that there were many steps involved in doing this: sawing, grinding, nailing, and waxing. Mom said Eetu had made the gift very carefully.

Emilian lahja on punakuvioisessa paperipussissa. Äiti yrittää arvata, mikä lahja voi olla litteä.

 Emily's gift is in a red-patterned paper bag. Mom tries to guess which gift can be flat.

Emilian lahja on muistivihko. Siihen voi kirjoittaa mitä hyvänsä. Äiti tykkää siitä kovasti.

 Emily's gift is a notebook. You can write anything on it. Mom likes it very much.

Isä on ostanut äidille tummanpunaisen ruusun ja suklaarasian. Hän on keittänyt myös kahvia hänelle. Lautasella on tällä kertaa kaksi suolakeksiä. Äidille sanotaan, että keittiössä on täytekakku ja lisää kahvia. Pöytä on katettu koko perheelle.

Dad has bought mother a dark red rose and a box of assorted chocolates. He has also made coffee for her. This time there are two salted biscuits on the plate. Mom is told there is a cake in the kitchen and more coffee. The table is set for the whole family.

Keittiössä on tarjolla täytekakkua, pikkuleipiä, lapsille mehua ja aikuisille kahvia. Pöydällä on lisäksi äidin saama suklaarasia.

In the kitchen there are a cake, biscuits, juice for children and coffee for adults. There is also a box of chocolates.

Kaikki ovat pukeutuneet ja saapuneet keittiöön. Eetu ja isä ovat jo odottamassa muita.

 Everyone is dressed and arrived into the kitchen. Eetu and Dad are already waiting for others.

Äidillä on iloinen mieli ja hän toivottaa kaikille äideille hyvää äitienpäivää!

Mother is glad and she wishes all mothers a Happy Mother´s Day!

Staying at home 3

Mitä sinä syöt lohturuokana nyt? Emilia ja Eetu rakastavat pannukakkuja hillon ja kermavaahdon kanssa.Sekä tietenkin kylmän maidon kanssa.

What do you like to eat as comfort food now? Emily and Eetu love pancakes with jam and whipped cream and of course with cold milk.

Mutta jonkun oli tehtävä pannukatkut ensin. Emilia tietää, miten niitä tehdään. Mutta hän ei ollut aivan varma kaikista vaiheista. Joten hän ei antanut Eetun sekaantua tähän tärkeään tehtävään.
Pannukakut onnistuivat täydellisesti!

But somebody has to make the pancakes at first. Emily knows how to make them. But she was not quite sure about all details. She did not allow Eetu to interfere with this important task.
The pancakes succeeded perfectly!

Nykyaikainen kattaus Modern table setting

Tänä vuonna keittiön pöydällä on musta-valkoinen pöytäliina joululiinana. Se on modernia Marimekon Kuusikossa kangasta. Astiat ovat pääasiassa valkoisia.

Jouluaattoaamulla syödään aina riisipuuroa. Tänä vuonna se keitetään kookosmaitoon tavallisen maidon sijasta. Puurokattilassa on myös yksi manteli. Se jonka lautaselta se löytyy, saa pienen suklaarasian.  Aamiainen yritetään pitää terveellisenä, sillä päivän aikana varsinkin lapset syövät paljon makeisia ja leivonnaisia.

This year there is a black and white table cloth on the kitchen table asChristmas table cloth. The fabric of it is modern and wellknown Marimekko  Kuusikossa (In the Forest). The dishes are mainly white.

At Christmas rice porridge is always eaten as breakfast.This year it is cookedi n coconut milk instead of regular milk. One almond is also in the porridge pot. The one who gets the almond gets a small box of chocolate. Breakfast is tried to keep healthy as children, especially during the day, eat a lot of sweets and pastries.

Tiskipöydältä löytyykin pikkuleipiä kahdessa kerroslautasessa. Ja vanhemmille kahvia.

There are cookies in two tiered plates and some coffee for the parents.

Leivo ja maista Bake and taste

Joulutortut ovat ehkä perinteisin joululeivonnainen meillä Suomessa. Suomalaiset tietävät, että ne tehdään voitaikinasta tai lehtitaikinasta. Ne ovat tähden muotoisia ja niissä on perinteisesti luumumarmeladia täytteenä.

Nykyään ne voivat olla muunkin muotoisia ja täytteenä voi olla jotain muuta marmeladia.

Christmas tarts are the most traditional Christmas pastry in Finland. We Finns know that they  are made from puff pastry. They are in the shape of a star or pinwheel and filled with prune jam.

The pastries can be in other shapes too and apple is used in place of the prune jam.

Uunissa niistä tulee ruskeareunaisia. Emilia tietää, että ne maistuvat parhaimmilta lämpiminä kylmän maidon kanssa.

After baking in the oven, they become brown in the edges. Emily knows that a hot pastry tastes best with cold milk.

Nykyään monet ostavat kaupasta valmista taikinaa, joka on usein pakastettuja levyjä, joista tulee aina 2 torttua. Niistä leipominen on todella nopeaa ja helppoa. Monissa naiset ovat Suomessa työssäkäyviä, joten iltaisin on hyvin vähän aikaa valmistautua jouluun.

Nowadays many housewifes buy frozen doughplates from a shop to save time. It is easy and quick to bake from them. In Finland the women are embloyed and they have so little time in the everings to prepare for the Christmas.

Eilen Yesterday

Emila, Eetu, Marianne ja Tuomo viettivät ystävänpäivää eilen niin kuin monet muutkin tekivät. Siis herkutellen.

Emily, Eetu, Marianne and Tuomo celebrated Valentine´s Day yesterday in the same way than many others did. I mean they ate delicacies.

Lapsilla on päivittäin pieniä tehtäviä, josta he saavat viikkorahaa. Nyt he ovat kattaneet pöydän äidin ohjeitten mukaan. Pöydällä on uusi pöytäliina, jossa on hauskoja kuppikakun kuvia.

The children have small daily tasks for their pocket money. They have set the table now according to mother´s instuctions. There is a new table cloth on the table. It has been printed with pictures of acupcakes.
 

Kun kaikki oli valmiina, istui Eetu heti odottamaan vanhempia. Emilia kyllä sanoi hänelle, että pitää odottaa rauhassa.

When everything was ready, Eetu sat immediately to wait for the parents. Emily told him to wait still. 

Äiti on leiponut marjapiirakan, joka näyttää herkulliselta. Juomalasissa on vaaleanpunaisen paperin sisällä suklaatankoja.

Mom has made a berry pie that looks delicious. There are chocolate bars covered with pink paper in the glass.

Isä oli käynyt ostamassa kukkakaupasta vaaleanpunaisia tulppaaneja. Hän halusi yllättää vaimonsa niillä. Mutta voitteko uskoa, että äitikin oli käynyt kukkakaupassa ja ostanut myös tulppaaneja, mutta ne olivat onneksi vähän erilaisia.


Dad had gone to buy pink tulips from a flower shop. He wanted to surprise his wife. But can you believe that mom had gone to a flower shop too and also bought tulips, but fortunately they were a little bit different.

Pipareita Gingerbreads

Pipareiden leipominen on kivaa. Muutamaa minuuttia myöhemmin keittiössä leijailee hyvä tuoksu.

It is fun to bake gingerbreads. Some minutes later the aroma from the baking will be filling the kitchen.

Marianne mietti, että lapset haluavat varmasti leipoa myös pipareita. Pitää jättää heillekin taikinaa.

The children want surely bake cookies too. I have to leave them some dough.

Piparkakkutalon osat on paistettu. Koskaan aikasemmin ei Marianne ole taloa tehnyt, mutta nyt kokeillaan.                      Hauskaa viikonloppua!

All the parts fort the gingerbread house have been baked. Marianne has never made a house, but she is going to try it now.           Have a nice weekend!

Joulutorttuja Pies

Joulutortut ovat herkullisia leivonnaisia. Niitä on helppo tehdä kaupasta ostetusta pakastetusta valmistaikinasta. Myös kakun tekeminen on helppoa. Tässä kakussa on mausteina kanelia, neilikkaa ja inkivääriä.

Christmas pies are delicious pastries. It is easy to make them if you buy a frozen dough from your shop. It is easy to make a cake too. This cake contains spices like cinnamon, cloves and ginger.

Joulutorttu tehdään perinteisesti voitaikinasta tähden tai tuulimyllyn muotoon ja se täytetään luumuhillolla. Nykyään myös usein omenahillolla. Päälle ripotellaan tomusokeria ennen syöntiä.

A joulutorttu is a sort of Christmas pastry. It is traditionally made from puff pastry in the shape of a star or pinwheel and filled with prune jam. They are often dusted with icing sugar just before eating.

Leivontapäivä Baking Day

Leipominen on rentouttavaa, mutta miksi nykyään on niin kiire, ettei siihen ole aikaa. Kiireestä huolimatta on Marianne on päättänyt leipoa leipää ja pullaa.

It is relaxing to bake, but why you are always too busy to do it. Despite the hassle, Marianne has decided to bake bread, buns and braids.

Hän on maistanut jo lämmintä maustelimppua. Kaikki tähtipullat ja kirsikoin koristellut pitkot säästetään jouluksi.

She has tasted the warm sweet loaf. All the star buns and braids, that have been decorated with cherries, will be saved for Christmas.

Tavallisesti hän leipoo ruisjauhoista reikäleipiä ja pyöreitä limppuja. Kaurajauhoista hän leipoo vaaleita pyöreitä limppuja.

She bakes usually this kind of bread. She uses rye flour and oat flour.

Suomi Finland 100 vuotta years

Onnea Suomi!   Congratulations Finland!

 

 Itsenäisyyspäivä on tänä vuonna meille vuoden tärkein juhlamme.Suomi täyttää tänään 100 vuotta.

The Independence Day is this year's most important celebration for us this year. The country fills today 100 years.

 Sininen ja valkoinen ovat Suomen värejä. Valkoinen kuvastaa lunta ja sininen taivasta ja vettä.

  Blue and white colors are Finland´s colors. White is for snow and blue for heaven and water.

 Keittiö on koristeltu muutamin sini-valkoisin elementein. Kaitaliinoissa on sinistä ja valkoista. Suomen lippu ja kynttilät ovat sini-valkoisia. Patalaput ovat myös sinisiä.

The kitchen has been decorated with some blue and white elements. The tablerunners are blue and white. The flag of Finland and the candles are blue and white. The potholders are also blue.

 Emilian äiti hankki tänä vuonna uusia sini-valkoisia astioita juuri tätä päivää varten. 

Alkuruokana on herkullista sienikeittoa, joka on uudessa kattilassa. Sen jälkeen on perunoita ja uunissa paistettua kalaa ja sen kanssa maistuvaa kastiketta.

Emily´s mother bought this year new blue and white dishes for this occation.

As starters there is a delicious mushroom soup that is in a new kettle. Then there are potatoes and oven baked fish and sauce with it.

Jälkiruuan on tehnyt Emilia. Hän on katsonut syksyllä Master Chef Australia -ohjelmaa televisiosta ja tietää, että ruuassa pitää olla jokin rouskuva elementti, kotitekoista makeaa jäätelöä ja tuoreita marjoja.

Dessert is made by Emilia. She has watched the Master Chef Australia program on TV in the fall and knows that the food needs a crunchy element, homemade sweet ice cream and fresh berries.

 Suomen kansalliskukka on kielo, mutta nyt oli tyydyttävä siniseen hyasinttiin. Sekin on kyllä ihana kukka, koska se tuoksuu myös. Hyasintin vieressä on uusia posliiniastioita.

 Finland's national flower is a lily of the valley, but they had to be satisfied to a blue hyacinth. Yes, that is a wonderful flower too, because of the scent. There are new porcelain pots next to the hyacinth.

Vietämme huomenna Suomi 100 vuotta juhlaa! Valmisteluita on tehty Emiliankin kotona. Sini-valkoiset kynttilät ja lippunauhat on otettu esille. Sininen kuvaa taivasta ja valkoinen lunta.

We celebrate tomorrow Finland 100 years anniversary! All kinds of preparations have been made at Emily´s. Blue and white candles and flags have been brought up. Blue color is for sky and white is for snow.
