Syntymäpäivä Birthday

 

 Emilia vietti syntymäpäiväänsä eilen. Samalla vietettiin Halloweenia. Emilia oli kutsunut parhaat ystävänsä juhlaan. Juhlassa olivat pikkuveli Eetu, hänen vieressään Minni. Emilia itse istuu pöydän päässä. Eetua vastapäätä istuu Sanni ja hänen vieressään Ulla.

Äiti oli leiponut hämähäkiverkkokakun ja haamuleivoksia. Ne maistuivat herkulliselta. 

Emily celebrated her birthday yesterday. At the same time she and the friends celebrated Halloween. Emily had invited her best friends to the party. Emily´s little brother Eetu is sitting at the table. Minnie is sitting next to Eetu. Sanni is sitting opposite Eetu and Ulla is sitting next to her.

Mother had baked a spiderwebcake and chost pastries. They were delicious.

        Myös vanhemmat oli kutsuneet vieraita.  He joivat kahvia musiikkihuoneessa.

        Also the parents had invited guests. They had coffee in the music room.

Äiti oli leiponut kurpitsapiirakan ja suklaatäytekakun. Kaupasta oli ostettu pikkuleipiä ja makeisia. 

Mother had baked a pumpkin pie and a chocolatecake. Some cookies and candies had been bought from the shop.

Äitienpäivä Mother´s Day

Eetu ja Emilia halusivat mennä herättämään tänä aamuna äidin, sillä hän nukkui edelleen. Heillä oli hänelle lahjoja ja kahvia.

Eetu and Emily wanted to go wake up their mother this morning as she was still sleeping. They had some gifts for her and coffee.

Eetu antoi äidille punaiseen paperiin käärityn lahjan.

Eetu gave Mom a gift wrapped in red paper.

Lahja oli puinen pannunalunen, jonka hän oli tehnyt koulussa. Eetu selitti, että sen tekemisessä oli monta työvaihetta: sahaamista, hiomista, naulaamista ja vahaamista. Äiti sanoi, että Eetu on tehnyt lahjan hyvin huolellisesti.

The gift was a wooden pan coaster he had made at school. Eetu explained that there were many steps involved in doing this: sawing, grinding, nailing, and waxing. Mom said Eetu had made the gift very carefully.

Emilian lahja on punakuvioisessa paperipussissa. Äiti yrittää arvata, mikä lahja voi olla litteä.

 Emily's gift is in a red-patterned paper bag. Mom tries to guess which gift can be flat.

Emilian lahja on muistivihko. Siihen voi kirjoittaa mitä hyvänsä. Äiti tykkää siitä kovasti.

 Emily's gift is a notebook. You can write anything on it. Mom likes it very much.

Isä on ostanut äidille tummanpunaisen ruusun ja suklaarasian. Hän on keittänyt myös kahvia hänelle. Lautasella on tällä kertaa kaksi suolakeksiä. Äidille sanotaan, että keittiössä on täytekakku ja lisää kahvia. Pöytä on katettu koko perheelle.

Dad has bought mother a dark red rose and a box of assorted chocolates. He has also made coffee for her. This time there are two salted biscuits on the plate. Mom is told there is a cake in the kitchen and more coffee. The table is set for the whole family.

Keittiössä on tarjolla täytekakkua, pikkuleipiä, lapsille mehua ja aikuisille kahvia. Pöydällä on lisäksi äidin saama suklaarasia.

In the kitchen there are a cake, biscuits, juice for children and coffee for adults. There is also a box of chocolates.

Kaikki ovat pukeutuneet ja saapuneet keittiöön. Eetu ja isä ovat jo odottamassa muita.

 Everyone is dressed and arrived into the kitchen. Eetu and Dad are already waiting for others.

Äidillä on iloinen mieli ja hän toivottaa kaikille äideille hyvää äitienpäivää!

Vappupäivä May the 1st

 

Emilian perheessä on tänäkin vappuna tehty simaa ja paistettu munkkeja.

Mother and Emily have made lemon juice and doughnuts for May the first. ( In Finland we say for vappu.)

Ne ovat parasta, mitä Eetu ja Emilia tietävät juuri nyt. Tänä vuonna vapun vietto on ollut vaatimattomampaa, koska on pysytty kotona. Heillä on ilmapalloja, serpentiiniä,vappuviuhkat ja -hyrrät.

 Äiti on hakenut puutarhasta tuoreita kukkia vaasiin.

They are the best that Eetu and Emily know right now. This year, the celebration of May the 1st has been more modest because they have stayed at home. They have balloons, serpentine, fans and whirlpools. 

Mom has fetched fresh flowers from the garden in a vase.

Kahvihetki Coffeetime

Mitä te olette tehneet viime päivinä? Meillä on ollut tuulista ja sateista. On ollut aikaa lukea,katsoa televisiota ja vain oleilla. Tänään Emilian perhe viettää kahvihetkeä olohuoneessa. Äiti on leiponut herkullisia kakkuja ja piirakan.

What have you been doing in recent days? The weather has been windy and rainy here. It’s been time to read, watch TV and just be there. Today, Emily’s family spends a coffeetime in the living room. Mom has baked delicious cakes and a pie.

Emilia ja Eetu kertovat vanhemmille, että monet heidän koulukaverinsa viettävät pääsiäistä Pohjois-Suomen laskettelukeskuksissa. Ja heillä on siellä tosi hauskaa. Toivottavasti he pysyvät siellä terveinä.

Emily and Eetu tell their parents that many of their schoolmates spend Easter at the ski resorts in Northern Finland. And they have a lot of fun there. I hope they stay there healthy.
 

The Easter Egg Hunt

 

Suklaiset yllätysmunat ovat lasten mielestä parhaita munia. Eetu on avannut kaksi munaa, joista tuli pienet purjeveneet. Hänellä oli kiire päästä avaamaan munat, sillä hän odotti niistä kivaa lelua.

Children think the chocolate surprise eggs are the best ones. Eetu has opened two eggs. He got two small sailing boats. He was in a hurry to open the eggs, because he wanted nice toys from them.

Emilia on tullut Eetun huoneeseen oman munakorinsa kanssa. Hän ihmettelee, miksi Eetulla oli niin kiire avata jo kaksi munaa.

Emilia has come to Eetu's room with her own egg basket.She wonders why Eetu was so in a hurry to open two eggs already.

Emilialla ja Eetulla on kummallakin kori täynnä munia. Niitä etsittiin sängystä, kaapista, kirjahyllystä ja monesta muustakin paikasta. Se oli hauskaa.

Emily and Eetu each have a basket full of eggs. They were searched for in the bed, closet, bookshelf, and many other places.  It was fun.

Lapsille on kerrottu, että pääsiäispupu tuo suklaamunat heille. He eivät ole kuitenkaan koskaan nähneet pääsiäispupuja. Eetulla on pöydällä kaksi puista pupua, mutta nehän ovat koristeita eikä oikeita eläimiä.

The children have been told that the Easter bunny brings chocolate eggs to them. However, they have never seen Easter bunnies. Eetu has two wooden bunnies on the table, but they are decorations and not real animals.

Emilialla ja Eetulla on tänä aamuna ollut hauskaa tekemistä. He ovat maalanneet munia. Se on tosin sotkuista puuhaa. Pöytäkin piti suojata paperilla. 

 

Emily and Eetu have had something funny to do this morning. They have painted eggs. It is a very messy task to do. The table had to be covered with paper.

 

Yhtenä ääsiäisperinteenä meillä Suomessa on laittaa vaasiin pajun oksia. Mutta toki me ostammekin paljon kukkia kuten narsisseja ja tulppaaneja.Suurimmassa osassa Suomea on vielä lunta maassa, joten emme voi poimia näitä kukkia puutarhastamme.

One of the Easter traditions in Finland is to put willow brances in the vase. But of course we buy a lot of flowers such as tulips and narcissuses. In the most parts of Finland there is still snow on the ground, so we can´t pick up these flowers from our garden.

Tapaninpäivänä On the Boxing Day

Meillä Suomessa syödään edelleenkin joulunaikaan paljon vihanneksista tehtyjä ruokia.Ennen vanhaan vihannekset kasvatettiin itse tai ne olivat edullisia ostaa. Nykyään ulkomaiset herkut ovat suosittuja. Emilian perheessä on kuitenkin perinteisiä jouluruokia.

In Finland, we still eat a lot of vegetable dishes at Christmas time.In the old days, vegetables were grown on their own or were inexpensive to buy. Nowadays foreign dishes are popular. However, Emily´s family has traditional Christmas dishes.
 

Äidillä on ollut kiirettä. Musiikkihuoneen huonekaluja piti laittaa toisenlaiseen järjestykseen, sillä huoneeseen piti tuoda sivupöytä ruokia varten.

Mother has been busy. They had to move the piano into an other corner because they had to bring a side table for the food.

Isä on jossain ja muu perhe odottaa häntä päivälliselle.

Father is somewhere and the family members are waiting for him for dinner.

Isä on saapunut. He voivat aloittaa ruokailun nyt.

Dad has arrived. They can start eating now.

Nykyaikainen kattaus Modern table setting

Tänä vuonna keittiön pöydällä on musta-valkoinen pöytäliina joululiinana. Se on modernia Marimekon Kuusikossa kangasta. Astiat ovat pääasiassa valkoisia.

Jouluaattoaamulla syödään aina riisipuuroa. Tänä vuonna se keitetään kookosmaitoon tavallisen maidon sijasta. Puurokattilassa on myös yksi manteli. Se jonka lautaselta se löytyy, saa pienen suklaarasian.  Aamiainen yritetään pitää terveellisenä, sillä päivän aikana varsinkin lapset syövät paljon makeisia ja leivonnaisia.

This year there is a black and white table cloth on the kitchen table asChristmas table cloth. The fabric of it is modern and wellknown Marimekko  Kuusikossa (In the Forest). The dishes are mainly white.

At Christmas rice porridge is always eaten as breakfast.This year it is cookedi n coconut milk instead of regular milk. One almond is also in the porridge pot. The one who gets the almond gets a small box of chocolate. Breakfast is tried to keep healthy as children, especially during the day, eat a lot of sweets and pastries.

Tiskipöydältä löytyykin pikkuleipiä kahdessa kerroslautasessa. Ja vanhemmille kahvia.

There are cookies in two tiered plates and some coffee for the parents.

Glögiä Glogg

Nyt on aika rauhoittua ja istua hetken rauhassa. Lapset juovat mehua ja vanhemmat kuumaa glögiä. En tunne kovinkaan hyvin kyseisen juoman historiaa. Mutta olisi kiva, jos komentoisitte kirjoitusta, jos juoma on tunnettu maassanne.

It is time to calm down and sit a while. The children are drinking juice but the parents are having a warm glogg. 

I don´t know very well the history of that drink, but those of you, who don´t know anything about it, this is for you.  Glogg or Gluehwein is a spiced, usually alcoholic drink and it is served warm. The alcohol in it is usually wine or rum. Nonalcoholic glogg is based on juice, often mixed fruit juice. Both of them contain many spices like ginger, clove, bitter orange, cardamom and of course sugar.  It is common to add whole almonds and raisings to glogg while it is being warmed up or just before drinking.
We drink glogg  at Christmas time.

kuusenkoristelua trimming the Christmas tree

 Joulukuusen koristelu nauhoin ja palloin on lasten mielestä kivaa puuhaa. Se on vaikeaa puuhaa, kun puun ylös ei ylety laittamaan koristeita. Työhön tarvitaan silloin aikuisia.

Trimming the Christmas tree with tinsels and ornaments is very fun for the children. It is a difficult task when the tree is not reached for decoration.The adults are needed then.

Koristeita ihan liikaa. Nämä voisi antaa vaikkapa jollekin sellaisella perheelle, joilla ei ole koristeita.

They have too many ornaments and tinsels. They don´t need them actually. Maybe they give them as a present for a poor family.

Hyvää Itsenäisyyspäivää! Happy Independence Day Finland!

Emiliankin perheessä vietetään tänään Suomen Itsenäisyyspäivää. Sää on ollut tänään sateinen, joten televisiota on katsottu monta tuntia. Kaikki ovat pukeutuneet juhlavasti vai mitä mieltä olet?

 Today is the Independence Day of Finland. Is is celebrated also at Emily´s home. The weather is rainy. They have been watching television for many hours. Everyone has party wear or what do you think?

 Marianne-äiti on ostanut juhlapäivää varten valkoisen joulutähden.  Se on ihanan suuri.

Mother has bought a white poinsettia for the day. It is lovely and a big one.

Eilen Yesterday

Emila, Eetu, Marianne ja Tuomo viettivät ystävänpäivää eilen niin kuin monet muutkin tekivät. Siis herkutellen.

Emily, Eetu, Marianne and Tuomo celebrated Valentine´s Day yesterday in the same way than many others did. I mean they ate delicacies.

Lapsilla on päivittäin pieniä tehtäviä, josta he saavat viikkorahaa. Nyt he ovat kattaneet pöydän äidin ohjeitten mukaan. Pöydällä on uusi pöytäliina, jossa on hauskoja kuppikakun kuvia.

The children have small daily tasks for their pocket money. They have set the table now according to mother´s instuctions. There is a new table cloth on the table. It has been printed with pictures of acupcakes.
 

Kun kaikki oli valmiina, istui Eetu heti odottamaan vanhempia. Emilia kyllä sanoi hänelle, että pitää odottaa rauhassa.

When everything was ready, Eetu sat immediately to wait for the parents. Emily told him to wait still. 

Äiti on leiponut marjapiirakan, joka näyttää herkulliselta. Juomalasissa on vaaleanpunaisen paperin sisällä suklaatankoja.

Mom has made a berry pie that looks delicious. There are chocolate bars covered with pink paper in the glass.

Isä oli käynyt ostamassa kukkakaupasta vaaleanpunaisia tulppaaneja. Hän halusi yllättää vaimonsa niillä. Mutta voitteko uskoa, että äitikin oli käynyt kukkakaupassa ja ostanut myös tulppaaneja, mutta ne olivat onneksi vähän erilaisia.


Dad had gone to buy pink tulips from a flower shop. He wanted to surprise his wife. But can you believe that mom had gone to a flower shop too and also bought tulips, but fortunately they were a little bit different.

On hiljaista It is quiet

Marianne ja Tuomo katselevat televisiota. Lapset leikkivät omissa huoneissaan. On hiljaista.Emilia onnistui tekemään piparkakkutalon valmiiksi. Sitä ei voi tarkastella kovin läheltä. Tiedättehän, että se oli aika haasteellinen. Hah, hah.
Marianne on tuonut olohuoneen pöydälle pikkuleipiä, vihreitä kuulia ja suklaakonvehteja ja miettii, että saakohan hän ja isä syödä ne ilman lapsia.

Marianne and Tuomo are watching TV. The children are playing in their rooms. It is really quiet.  Emily succeeded in making the gingerbread house. We can´t show it you closer. You know, it was quite challenging to make it. Ha. ha.
Marianne has brought some cookies, green marmalade balls and chocolates on the coffee table. She is wondering whether she and dad can eat them without the children
 

"Mitä nämä ovat? Kenelle?" - Eetu kysyy. Hän ilmestyy yht´äkkiä olohuoneeseen. Hänellä on kädessään joulupukin tuoma kilpa-auto.

What are these? For whom? "- Eetu asks. He suddenly appears in the living room. He has a racing car in his hand. He got it from Santa Claus.

Kaikki ovat hiljaa. Emilia on yhä huoneessaan. Tekeekö hän jotakin kiinnostavaa? Koeta arvata, mitä hän tekee. Saat hänen vastauksensa huomenna.

Everyone is still. Emily is further in her room. Will she do something interesting? Try to guess it. You'll get her answer tomorrow.

Eilen Yesterday

Meillä suomalaisilla on omituinen tapa viettää juhlapäivää. Eilen istuimme lähes koko päivän katsomalla televisiota,ainakin 9 tuntia. Eikö ole hassua?  Ensin katsoimme Tuntematon Sotilas -elokuvan ja sitten illalla katsoimme presidenttiparin juhlavastaanottoa.  Näin teemme joka vuosi.

We Finns have a strange way to spend yesterday´s anniversary. We sat almost all day watching television, at least 9 hours. Isn´t that funny? At first we looked at the Unknown Soldier movie and then in the evening we looked at the President's Party Reception. We do this every year.

Lapsetkin jaksoivat katsoa linnan juhlia monta tuntia. He arvostelivat, kenellä vieraista on kaunein mekko. Emilia ja Eetukin olivat pukeutuneet juhlavaatteisiin.

Also  the children watched TV many hours. They judged, which guests had the most beautiful dresses. They were also welldressed themselves.
 

Vanhemmillakin oli juhlavaatteet päällään. Äidin mielestä koko päivä oli aivan erityinen. Suomi on nyt siis 100 vuotta vanha.

The parents had  also festive clothing. Mother thought the whole day was very special. Finland is now 100 years old.

Joulukaktus puhkesi kukkaan juuri juhlapäivänä.  Se on ihana kukka.

Mother´s cactus blossomed out jus for the day. It is a lovely flower.

Suomi Finland 100 vuotta years

 Itsenäisyyspäivä on tänä vuonna meille vuoden tärkein juhlamme.Suomi täyttää tänään 100 vuotta.

The Independence Day is this year's most important celebration for us this year. The country fills today 100 years.

 Sininen ja valkoinen ovat Suomen värejä. Valkoinen kuvastaa lunta ja sininen taivasta ja vettä.

  Blue and white colors are Finland´s colors. White is for snow and blue for heaven and water.

 Keittiö on koristeltu muutamin sini-valkoisin elementein. Kaitaliinoissa on sinistä ja valkoista. Suomen lippu ja kynttilät ovat sini-valkoisia. Patalaput ovat myös sinisiä.

The kitchen has been decorated with some blue and white elements. The tablerunners are blue and white. The flag of Finland and the candles are blue and white. The potholders are also blue.

 Emilian äiti hankki tänä vuonna uusia sini-valkoisia astioita juuri tätä päivää varten. 

Alkuruokana on herkullista sienikeittoa, joka on uudessa kattilassa. Sen jälkeen on perunoita ja uunissa paistettua kalaa ja sen kanssa maistuvaa kastiketta.

Emily´s mother bought this year new blue and white dishes for this occation.

As starters there is a delicious mushroom soup that is in a new kettle. Then there are potatoes and oven baked fish and sauce with it.

Jälkiruuan on tehnyt Emilia. Hän on katsonut syksyllä Master Chef Australia -ohjelmaa televisiosta ja tietää, että ruuassa pitää olla jokin rouskuva elementti, kotitekoista makeaa jäätelöä ja tuoreita marjoja.

Dessert is made by Emilia. She has watched the Master Chef Australia program on TV in the fall and knows that the food needs a crunchy element, homemade sweet ice cream and fresh berries.

 Suomen kansalliskukka on kielo, mutta nyt oli tyydyttävä siniseen hyasinttiin. Sekin on kyllä ihana kukka, koska se tuoksuu myös. Hyasintin vieressä on uusia posliiniastioita.

 Finland's national flower is a lily of the valley, but they had to be satisfied to a blue hyacinth. Yes, that is a wonderful flower too, because of the scent. There are new porcelain pots next to the hyacinth.
