Joulukuun 2. päivä December the 12th

 

Himmeli on perinteinen suomalainen joulukoriste. Se on itseasiassa olkimobile. Se tehdään pujottamalla ohut lanka neulalla olkikappaleiden sisään. Yhdistämällä saman tai eri pituisia kappaleita yhteen voidaan tehdä malliltaan yksinkertainen tai monimutkainen himmeli. Himmeli ripustetaan kattoon ja se pyörii hitaasti ilmavirran mukana. Se on ollut suosittu koriste erityisesti maaseudulla, koska materiaalia on ollut helposti saatavilla ja lähes joka talossa on ollut sellainen henkilö, joka osaa tehdä himmelin.

Himmeli is a traditional Finnish Christmas decoration. It's actually a straw mobile. It is done by threading a thin thread with a needle into the straw pieces. By combining pieces of the same or different lengths together, a simple or complex himmelican be made. The himmeli is suspended from the ceiling and rotates slowly with the flow of air. It has been a popular decoration especially in the countryside because the material has been readily available and almost every house has had a person who knows how to make a himmeli.

Joulukuun 11. päivä December the 11th

 

Emilia kuuntelee radiosta joululauluja ja käärii lahjapapereita ostamiensa tavaroiden ympärille. Hänen lahjapaperinsa ovat erityisen kivoja, sillä ne on valittu huolella.

Emily listens to Christmas carols on the radio and wraps gift wraps around the goods she has bought. Her gift wraps are especially nice as they have been carefully selected. 

 

Emilia ei ole kotona yksin ja hänen olikin käärittävä lahjat lahjapapereihin nopeasti. Lahjat hän laittoi isoon pahvilaatikkoon, jota hän säilyttää sänkynsä alla.

Emily is not home alone and she had to wrap the gifts wrap quickly.She put the gifts in a big cardboard box, which he keeps under his bed.

Missä Sinä säilytät paketteja? Emilia on sitä mieltä, että kukaan ei voi tietää, että hänen sänkynsä alla on jotakin.

Where do You keep your parcels? Emily thinks no one can know that there is something under her bed.
 

Joulukuun 10. päivä December the 10 th

Vierashuoneestakin on saatu petivaatteet tuuletettua ja pölyt pyyhittyä. Sängylle on vaihdettu uusi päiväpeite ja tyynyt.

The guest room is also cleaned and the dust is wiped off. The bed has a new bedspread and pillows. 

Vanhojen verhojen tilalle on vaihdettu pitsiverhot. 

The old curtains have been replaced by lace curtains.

Marianne on laittanut joulukoristeita ja kukkia maltillisesti vähän sinne ja tänne.

Marianne has put some Christmas decorations and flowers here and there.

Valokuvat ovat valitettavasti  huonolaatuisia, koska meillä on täällä Suomessa tähän aikaan vuodesta vain vähän päivänvaloa.

Unfortunately, the photos are of poor quality, because we have little daylight here in Finland at this time of year.

Joulukuun 9. päivä December the 9th

 

 Juureslaatikot ovat meidän suomalaisten perinnejouluruokiamme. Marianne tekee niistä vain kahta erilaista: porkkanalaatikkoa ja lanttulaatikkoa. Ne säilyvät useita viikkoja pakastimessa.

Riisi ja porkkanat keitetään.

The casseroles made of roots are traditional Christmas dishes in Finland. Marianne makes two different kind of casseroles: carrot and swede casseroles. They endure well freezing.

Rice and carrots are boiled.

 

 

 

 Porkkanat muusataan ja seokseen lisätään riisi, munia, kermaa, suolaa ja sokeria tai siirappia.

The carrots are mashed and rice, eggs, cream, salt and sugar or syrup are added to the mixture.

Sitten seos kaadetaan uunivuokiin, esim. Pyrex-vuokiin ja paistetaan uunissa.

The mixture is then poured into oven dish, such as Pyrex oven dish, and baked in the oven.

Voit tehdä omia Pyrex-vuokia purukumipakkauksen kuplista. Leikkaa kuplat erilleen ja hio paperi pois kynsiviilalla.  

You can make Pyrex oven dishes for yourself from bubble gum packaging blisters. Cut the bubbles apart and sand the paper off with a nail file.

 

Lanttulaatikot tehdään keitetyistä lantuista, jotka survotaan. Seokseen lisätään siirappia,kermaa, suolaa, inkivääriä, kanelia ja muskottipähkinää. Seos kaadetaan uunivuokaan ja paistetaan uunissa. Väriltään ne ovat hieman tummenpia kuin porkkanalaatikot.

Swede casseroles are made of boiled and mashed swedes are sweetened and enriched wit a mixture of syrup, cream, salt, ginger,cinnamon and nutmeg.The mixture is poured into an ovenproof dish and baked in the oven. They are slightly darker in color than carrot casseroles.

Joulukuun 8. päivä December the 8th

 

Marianne on ehtinyt siivota ompeluhuoneensa jossain välissä, vaikka tekemistä riittää iltaisin vaikka miten paljon. Hyllyköstä on  pyyhitty pölyt ja sinne on laitettu muutamia joulukoristeita.

Marianne has had time to clean her sewing room between many tasks. No matter how much she has to do in the evenings. Dust has been wiped off the shelf and a few Christmas decorations have been placed there.

Pöydältäkin hän on siivonnut enimmät tavarat pois, jotta näyttäisi siistiltä.

She has even cleaned most of the stuff off the table to make it look tidy.

Hänellä on muutama lahjaksi menevä neuletyö vielä kesken, joista yhtä hän edistää juuri nyt.

She still has a few gift knitting jobs in progress, one of which she’s promoting right now.

Neuletyöt ovat rentouttavia, eikä haittaa, vaikka kerralla ei ehdi neuloa kauaan.

Knitting is relaxing, and it doesn’t matter, even if you don’t have time to knit for long at a time.

Joulukuun 7. päivä December the 7th

 

 Päivätyönsä jälkeen Marianne aloitti leivontahommat taas. Hänellä oli tarkoitus leipoa pikkupullia, joiden päällä on murotaikinatähdet sekä isoja vaaleita limppuja myös tähtikoristeella.

 

 After her day job, Marianne started baking again. She was supposed to bake little buns with stars and big light loaves also with star decoration.

 

Kun hän oli päässyt hyvään vauhtiin töissä, tuli Eetu penkille makaamaan. Äidin piti tentata hänen kertolaskutaitoja. Huomenna on siitä nopeuskoe.

After he got off to a good pace at work, Eetu came to lie on the bench. The mother had to test her multiplication skills. There will be a speed test for it tomorrow.

Äidillä oli myös perheen päivällinen työn alla. Kasviskeitto on hellalla.

Mom also had a family dinner at work. Vegetable soup is on the stove.

Äidin multitaskaustaidot olivat koetuksella tänään, mutta lopulta kaikki sujui hyvin. Leivät ja pullat valmistuivat, perhe sai ruuan ja Eetun laskemistaidot alkoivat sujua paremmin. (Multitaskaus on perheenäitien ominaisuus, jolla he pystyvät keskellä hälinääkin keskittymään moneen asiaan samalla kertaa.)

Mom’s multitasking skills were put to the test today, but in the end everything went well. The breads and buns were ready, the family got food and Eetu's caltulating skils became better. (Multitasking is a feature of mothers that allows them to focus on many things at the same time, even in the midst of a distractions.)

Itsenäisyyspäivä Independence Day

 

Tänään vietetään Suomen itsenäisyyspäivää. Lämpötila on nyt aamulla -30 astetta meillä Etelä-Pohjanmaalla. Hirveän kylmä!

Marianne ja Emilia on laittaneet lounaan ja kaikki ovat ehtineet kiireiltään pöydän ääreen. Ruokana on perunoita, kastiketta,kanankoipia, uunijuureksia ja vihersalaattia.

Today we Finns celebrate Finland´s Indepence Day. The temperature is now in the morning -30 degrees Celcius in Southern Ostrobothnia. Terribly cold.

Marianne and Emily have cooked the lunch and everybody are at the table. They have pealed potatoes, sauce, chicken legs, oven roots and salad.

 

Jälkiruoka on laseissa sivupöydällä. Siinä on murustettuja keksejä, kuivakakkua, kermavaahtoa,mausterahkaa sekä säilöttyjä hedelmiä.

 

Dessert is in glasses on the side table. It contains crushed biscuits, cake crumbs, whipped cream, curd and canned fruit.  

Lapset ovat nähneet olohuoneessa suklaarasian ja Eetu on ensimmäisenä valitsemassa itselleen parasta konvehtia. 

The children have seen a box of chocolates in the living room and Eetu is the first to choose the best chocolate for himself.
