Tapaninpäivänä On the Boxing Day

Meillä Suomessa syödään edelleenkin joulunaikaan paljon vihanneksista tehtyjä ruokia.Ennen vanhaan vihannekset kasvatettiin itse tai ne olivat edullisia ostaa. Nykyään ulkomaiset herkut ovat suosittuja. Emilian perheessä on kuitenkin perinteisiä jouluruokia.

In Finland, we still eat a lot of vegetable dishes at Christmas time.In the old days, vegetables were grown on their own or were inexpensive to buy. Nowadays foreign dishes are popular. However, Emily´s family has traditional Christmas dishes.
 

Äidillä on ollut kiirettä. Musiikkihuoneen huonekaluja piti laittaa toisenlaiseen järjestykseen, sillä huoneeseen piti tuoda sivupöytä ruokia varten.

Mother has been busy. They had to move the piano into an other corner because they had to bring a side table for the food.

Isä on jossain ja muu perhe odottaa häntä päivälliselle.

Father is somewhere and the family members are waiting for him for dinner.

Isä on saapunut. He voivat aloittaa ruokailun nyt.

Dad has arrived. They can start eating now.

Nykyaikainen kattaus Modern table setting

Tänä vuonna keittiön pöydällä on musta-valkoinen pöytäliina joululiinana. Se on modernia Marimekon Kuusikossa kangasta. Astiat ovat pääasiassa valkoisia.

Jouluaattoaamulla syödään aina riisipuuroa. Tänä vuonna se keitetään kookosmaitoon tavallisen maidon sijasta. Puurokattilassa on myös yksi manteli. Se jonka lautaselta se löytyy, saa pienen suklaarasian.  Aamiainen yritetään pitää terveellisenä, sillä päivän aikana varsinkin lapset syövät paljon makeisia ja leivonnaisia.

This year there is a black and white table cloth on the kitchen table asChristmas table cloth. The fabric of it is modern and wellknown Marimekko  Kuusikossa (In the Forest). The dishes are mainly white.

At Christmas rice porridge is always eaten as breakfast.This year it is cookedi n coconut milk instead of regular milk. One almond is also in the porridge pot. The one who gets the almond gets a small box of chocolate. Breakfast is tried to keep healthy as children, especially during the day, eat a lot of sweets and pastries.

Tiskipöydältä löytyykin pikkuleipiä kahdessa kerroslautasessa. Ja vanhemmille kahvia.

There are cookies in two tiered plates and some coffee for the parents.

Hiekkaa Sand

Meillä on ollut koko joulukuun ajan sateista ja kuraista. Hiekkaa tulee kenkien mukana sisälle ja on imuroitava ainakin pari kertaa viikossa.

On hyvä, että lapsilla on tiettyjä kotiaskareita, jotta he oppivat vastuuta. Emilian kotiaskare on imuroiminen. Onko täällä jo tarpeeksi siistiä?   Ainakin Emilian mielestä on.

We've had rain all through December. The shoes bring sand inside and you have to vacuumed at least a couple of times a week.

It is good that children have certain home tasks so that they learn responsibility. Emily's task is vacuuming. Is it clean enough here?  Emily thinks: yes it is.

Glögiä Glogg

Nyt on aika rauhoittua ja istua hetken rauhassa. Lapset juovat mehua ja vanhemmat kuumaa glögiä. En tunne kovinkaan hyvin kyseisen juoman historiaa. Mutta olisi kiva, jos komentoisitte kirjoitusta, jos juoma on tunnettu maassanne.

It is time to calm down and sit a while. The children are drinking juice but the parents are having a warm glogg. 

I don´t know very well the history of that drink, but those of you, who don´t know anything about it, this is for you.  Glogg or Gluehwein is a spiced, usually alcoholic drink and it is served warm. The alcohol in it is usually wine or rum. Nonalcoholic glogg is based on juice, often mixed fruit juice. Both of them contain many spices like ginger, clove, bitter orange, cardamom and of course sugar.  It is common to add whole almonds and raisings to glogg while it is being warmed up or just before drinking.
We drink glogg  at Christmas time.

Pikapikkuleipiä Instant cookies

Nämä pikapikkuleivät valmistuvat nopeasti. Et tarvitse uunia ollenkaan.

These instant cookies can be prepared very quickly. You don´t need an oven at all.

Materiaali   

kellertävä styrox rasia

Materials

a yellowish styro foam package 

 Muut tarvikkeet:

- piparkakun tai tähden muotoinen lävistin

- lasihelmiä koko 1,5 mm tai

  kynsiin kiinnitettäviä microhelmiä

- liimaa

- valkoista akryylimaalia

- sivellin

- cocktail tikkuja
- maalarinteippiä (puuttuu kuvasta)

- punches ( cookie or star shaped) 

- glass beads, size 1,5 mm  or

  micro beads for nails

- glue and masking tape

- white agrylic paint, brush, cocktail-sticks

Työjärjestys:

1. Lävistä lävistimellä piparit. Kuvio voi olla mikä tahansa. Piparit voi "syödä" jo nyt. Tai voit jatkaa koristelemalla niitä.

Styrox-alustassa toinen puoli on sileä ja toinen on hieman kuviollinen.

Do like this:

1. Punch cookies from the styro foam package as many as you want.

One side of the foam is flat and the other is embossed.

2. Katkaise maalarinteipistä pala ja käännä päät alaspäin. Paina teippi pöytään kiinni.

Painele piparit teippiin kiinni.Tasainen pinta ylöspäin.

2. Cut a piece of masking tape and turn the both ends toward the table. Press the tape on to the table.

Press the cookies onto the tape. The flat side up.

3. Maalaa ohuella valkoisella akryylimaalilla pipareiden päällipintaan "kiille".

3. Paint the cookies with white thin acrylic paint. The paint will be the icing.

 4. Liimaa lasihelmet pipareiden keskelle. Levitä liima ja siirrä helmet cocktailtikun avulla.

4. Glue the glass beads into the middle of the cookies. Spread the glue and attach the beads with an cocktailstick.

Piparit ovat valmiita.

The cookies are ready.

Leivo ja maista Bake and taste

Joulutortut ovat ehkä perinteisin joululeivonnainen meillä Suomessa. Suomalaiset tietävät, että ne tehdään voitaikinasta tai lehtitaikinasta. Ne ovat tähden muotoisia ja niissä on perinteisesti luumumarmeladia täytteenä.

Nykyään ne voivat olla muunkin muotoisia ja täytteenä voi olla jotain muuta marmeladia.

Christmas tarts are the most traditional Christmas pastry in Finland. We Finns know that they  are made from puff pastry. They are in the shape of a star or pinwheel and filled with prune jam.

The pastries can be in other shapes too and apple is used in place of the prune jam.

Uunissa niistä tulee ruskeareunaisia. Emilia tietää, että ne maistuvat parhaimmilta lämpiminä kylmän maidon kanssa.

After baking in the oven, they become brown in the edges. Emily knows that a hot pastry tastes best with cold milk.

Nykyään monet ostavat kaupasta valmista taikinaa, joka on usein pakastettuja levyjä, joista tulee aina 2 torttua. Niistä leipominen on todella nopeaa ja helppoa. Monissa naiset ovat Suomessa työssäkäyviä, joten iltaisin on hyvin vähän aikaa valmistautua jouluun.

Nowadays many housewifes buy frozen doughplates from a shop to save time. It is easy and quick to bake from them. In Finland the women are embloyed and they have so little time in the everings to prepare for the Christmas.

Apulainen Helper

 Äiti on ollut tänään joulupukin apulainen. Hän on tehnyt lahjapaketteja, mutta kesken kaiken on pitänyt lähteä keittämään ruokaa ja kaikki tavarat ovat jääneet levälleen.

(Pöydällä on kirjasta tehty joulukorttiteline, jossa kirjan sivu on taitettu kahtia. Itselläni on sellainen isossa koossa ja tykkään siitä paljon.)

Mother has been todays Santa´s helper. She has wrapped gifts, but she had to go to the kitchen to cook food. And that is why the goods are spread on the floor and on the table

There is a Christmas Card holder on the table. The book  pages have been folded in half vertically. I have same kind of card holder in big size and I love it.

 Hän osti uutta lahjapaperia, mutta löysi viime vuonna ostettujakin. Nyt ainakin paperi riittää.
